About the Course
Modules 4 and 5 is part 4 of 4-part course series on "Novel Approach to Treatment Resistant Depression".

Module 1: Disease Burden of Depression and Treatment Resistant Depression
Learning objectives:
  • Describe the prevalence, natural history, and diagnosis of major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression
  • Describe the challenges in achieving and maintaining remission in patients with treatment-resistant depression
  • Describe the additional medical, disability, and mortality burden in patients with treatment-resistant depression
Module 2: Mechanism of Disease and the Innovative Role of Esketamine in Addressing Depression
Learning objectives:
  • Describe how the impairment of synaptic plasticity can lead to reduced synaptic connections in the brains of patients with major depressive disorder
  • Describe the role of glutamate in maintaining synaptic connections and how alterations in glutamate signaling contribute to the development of major depressive disorder
  • Describe the novel mechanism of action for esketamine and how this approach may be used to restore synaptic connections in the brains of patients with major depressive disorder
Module 3: Innovations in the Management of TRD
Learning objectives:
  • Describe the development of intranasal esketamine for treatment-resistant depression and major depression with suicidal ideation
  • Describe the clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of intranasal esketamine for treatment-resistant depression
  • Describe the clinical evidence supporting the safety of intranasal esketamine for treatment-resistant depression
Module 4: Important Considerations in the Administration of Esketamine for TRD
Learning objectives:
  • Describe the novel design of esketamine nasal spray and the recommended instructions for administration in the treatment of depression
  • Describe the most common adverse events due to esketamine use and the best approach to post-administration patient monitoring
  • Describe the built-in precautions which promote the safe use of esketamine and mitigate the risk of abuse
Module 5: Clinical Case Studies
Learning objectives:
  • Apply clinical evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of esketamine to a spectrum of clinical scenarios involving patients with treatment-resistant depression

About the Presenters

Dr. Salina Abdul Aziz
Dr Salina is the current Head of Service for psychiatry in MOH and she is an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Epidemiologist. She received her medical doctor degree and Master of Medicine (Psy) from University Kebangsaan Malaysia and went on to receive her Masters in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Newcastle, Australia. Dr Salina has extensive interest in mental health research and have published various articles. She has also authored and contributed in several national guidelines in mental health management over the years.
Dr. Norhayati Nordin
Dr Norhayati Nordin is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and a hospital director. She obtained her Bachelor and Master in Medicine (Psychiatry) from University Kebangsaan Malaysia and subsequently her subspeciality training in University of Melbourne/Monash, Australia. Dr Norhayati has contributed in various clinical trials in the areas of schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, mania and various other mental conditions. Dr Norhayati is also involved in plethora of national level trainings and training modules’ development in psychiatry.
Prof. Ahmad Hatim Bin Sulaiman
Professor Dr Hatim is a Professor and a Head of Department in the Department of Psychological Medicine in a teaching hospital. Professor Hatim received his Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate degree from University Malaya. He has extensive experience as a principle investigator, authored and co-authored many publications in the research area of psychiatry (psychopharmacology) leading to various publications. Professor Hatim was also the recipient of a plethora of awards including “Best Lecturer Award for Post Graduate (Psychiatry), Faculty of Medicine, 2017, (Ptj), Excellence Service Award, University Malaya, 2013, (University), and “Pengarang Buku Terlaris” in 2007.
Prof. Jesjeet Singh Gill
Professor Dr Jesjeet Singh is a Professor in the Department of Psychological Medicine in a teaching hospital and an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist and Lecturer. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees (Psychological Medicine, MPM) from University of Malaya. Professor Jesjeet has contributed and authored various research publication in the area of psychiatry in urban mental health, early psychosis and psychosexuality.
Dr. Ang Jin Kiat
Dr Ang Jin Kiat is a Senior Lecturer and Psychiatrist with expertise in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy (psychodynamic) and mood disorders. Dr. Ang Jin Kiat has authored and co-authored several national and international publications and also working as a reviewer for reputed professional journals. Dr. Ang made his mark in the scientific community with the contributions and wide recognition from honourable subject experts around the world.
Dr. Hazli Zakaria
Dr Hazli Zakaria is an esteemed psychiatrist who is specialized in the field of general adult psychiatry, anxiety and mood disorder and addition. Dr Hazli obtained his MBBS from University of Adelaide and Masters in Psychiatry from University Kebangsaan Malaysia. He has contributed in various research work covering schizophrenia and cognition, mood disorder, addiction, and stress and anxiety. Dr Hazli is also the current President of the Malaysian Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Ting Joe Hang
Dr Ting Joe Hang is a Consultant Psychiatrist who has a wide-range of experience as a psychiatrist being involved in various research and publication as well as lecturing. Dr Ting obtained his MBBS from Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Masters in Psychological medicine from University Malaya.
Associate Prof. Ng Chong Guan
Associate Professor Ng Chong Guan obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2001 and went on to obtain his Master in Psychological Medicine from University Malaya. He was awarded the scholarship from European Union via AsiaLink to complete the Clinical Epidemiology and later obtained his PhD in Clinical Epidemiology in Utrecht University. Dr Ng has numerous publications in prestigious medical journals and a regular speaker for local and international conferences. He has special interest in the treatment of depression among cancer patients (psycho-oncology).
Associate Prof. Nik Ruzyanei Nik Jaafar
Associate Professor Nik Ruzyanei is a Consultant Psychiatrist and an Associate Professor at a Department of Psychiatry in a teaching hospital. She received her Bachelor degree from University College Dublin and went on to receive her Master degree (Psych) from University Kebangsaan Malaysia. Associate Prof. Nik is passionate in research and has contributed in various research publications in local and international journals. She also sits on the editorial board and works as reviewer for ASEAN Journal of Psychiatry (Federation of ASEAN Psychiatry and Mental Health, AFPMH).
